Working Together for Excellence and Enjoyment

Design Technlogy with Miss Walker 1.12.21

We spent another enjoyable morning working with Miss Walker, this time exploring  structures. We looked at the three different types of structure; shell, frame and solid. We then looked at a variety of structures and had to show, with different coloured voting cards, what type of structure they were. We then sorted a selection of pictures of   structures into two groups; natural or man-made. After that we made shell structures in the shape of a cylinder, a cube and a triangular prism using paper and glue. We then tested the strength of each structure by placing a book on top of them. The cube and  triangular prims collapsed straight away but the cylinder was able to support the weight of several books. This was because the circular shape allows the pressure to be even all the way round and the strength goes all the way through the cylinder.
