03.02.23 Eco Committee members interviewed to 2 men from the "Tree Man, Tree Specialists" today.
How many trees did you plant last year?
In Telford and Wrekin 7000 planted were planted, just by them! There are also other specialists planting trees.
What species of tree are you planting?
Catsura, Whitebeam, Black gum, Antarctic beech,- native to Chile and Argentina.
What size will the trees be?
Antarctic beech will grow to 15 meters.
Why is the spade so big?
We use different sizes of spades, large for scooping up the mud and smaller for churning up the ground.
Why do you wear those boots and trousers?
The steel tipped boots are for protection and so are the chain-saw trousers with special fibre inside. One of the men had a hole in his trousers and said it had been made by a chainsaw and the trousers saved him from being badly cut!
The men had a map showing the area for planting. They have to space trees out so they have room for a mower.
They dig a square hole and the roots grow outwards into it. This is better for the standing of the tree.
The men showed us tablets which looked like chalk. They put these in with the trees and some water like a vitamin pill. It has nutrients like mushrooms.
