Lilleshall School- PE, Implementation and Impact Statement

Intent

At Lilleshall Primary School it is our intent that all children will be ‘lifelong participants’ in sport, with the skills and abilities to apply their learning to a range of different sports or activities. As a school, we share the vision that Physical Education is not only important for children’s physical health but also their mental health. We aim to make Physical Education enjoyable and accessible to all children regardless of ability and gender. Whatever the pursuit, Physical Education and Sport supports essential team building skills and helps to maintain fitness and vigour, self-esteem and confidence. It also utilises  and embeds our "Making Our Learning Fly" language and attitudes to learning. We endeavour to introduce children to a wide range of sports so that they can find the activity that appeals to them and that they can pursue beyond their time in school, promoting a healthier future lifestyle.

Implementation

Physical Education is provided through a broad and balanced curriculum of physical activities including gymnastics, dance, athletics, games, swimming and opportunities to explore other sports. We aim to provide two hours of curriculum PE a week. Progression in skills and knowledge in the subject is outlined in the PE progression grid. The curriculum for PE is delivered throughout the whole school and repetition of sports is part of our coverage to allow children to refine and further their skills that they have already learnt previously. This allows the children to transfer skills learnt in one activity/sport and relate it to another, always building upon what they have learnt or skills acquired. Teachers use a combination of: CPD learnt skills and ‘Get Set 4 PE’ teaching resources to deliver engaging and progressive lessons, which are led by the skills progressions. Within schools, we have our own Sports Leader to coach both tennis and football  - this allows the children to receive specialised teaching; as a result of this many children take up these two sports externally outside of school, which embeds our ‘lifelong participants’. We provide swimming for years 3, 4, 5 & 6. The children also learn about safety in the water. Children in year 6 have the opportunity to attend an annual residential visit to Arthog Outdoor Educational Centre, where they take part in outdoor and adventurous activities, which are organised and supervised by qualified members of site staff.

We provide a variety opportunities to attend sporting afterschool clubs. We had offer a range of clubs including: football, netball, tennis, running,  golf, New Age Kurling, boccia and many more. During the school year, we have a Sports Week where pupils try out different sports to those normally on offer in school, these may include climbing, ice-skating, mountain biking, skateboarding. The pupils focus on a given sport for the week learning about the sport and those who have been very successful in this area. We have guest sports people into school to share their experiences and inspire and motivate pupils.

Impact

The impact of the PE curriculum is that the children will meet their age-appropriate skills in Physical Education and be able to transfer these skills into other sports and everyday activities. It is hoped that physical education will light a love of sport and physical activity, so that our children will engage in extra-curricular sporting opportunities provided by the school and local clubs and agencies. Through our Physical Education curriculum, we believe we can equip children with skills in team building, promote physical and mental health and boost confidence and resilience. As a result of our physical education curriculum we are extremely proud to have been awarded the highest award available - Platinum in the School Games Mark recognising the high standard of our curriculum offer.
