Lilleshall Primary School Sport Spending 2015-2016

Impact Statement

Over the last academic year the participation of pupils in after school clubs has increased from 45% to 55%. This is as a result of a variety of different sporting bodies coming into school throughout the year to offer coaching as part of the P.E curriculum. These include Lilleshall Golf Club, Lilleshall Tennis Club, Newport Rugby Club and Premier Sport. Years 3 and 4 have visited Telford Ski Club to take part in a taster session for ski-ing and toboganning. A wheelchair football team visited from Lilleshall Sports Centre to increase our provisioin of inclusive sports and this has resulted in a pupil attending the wheechair football club. We had an Olympic celebrtion week where the children participated in samba drumming and brazilian dance sessions in preparation for the Rio Olympics. This ran alongside our Sport's week which culminated in our School Sport's Day where Oak House were the overall winners.

We are the first school in Telford and Wrekin to achieve the JRSO Gold award and through the P.E funding we have provided children with the opportunity to learn Road Safety, cycling proficiency and scooter training which has led to an increased participation of walking and cycling to school thus encouraging children to lead healthier lifestyles.

Providing funding for transport to sporting events has led to an increased participation in competitive sports and our archery and New Age Kurling teams qualified for the Shropshire Games in July.

Primary Physical Education and Sports Premium 2014-2015

Impact Statement

Lilleshall Primary School was awarded the Sainsbury School Games Gold in July 2015. The impact of this funding has been that as a school we have been able to greatly improve the quality and range of PE equipment provided for pupils and to improve the storage systems and equipment available. We have also been able to access professional coaches to support the skill development of our pupils. We are now reviewing the needs of our pupils and using this to increase provision. The school has been congratulated by visitors on the provision, skill development and positive attitude of the pupils and staff.

Over 45% of children have participated in an after school sporting club and we have entered competitions in Rugby, Swimming, Tennis and Archery; with our Archery team qualifying for the Shropshire School Games. As a result of the success of our running club children moving up to Burton Borough this year have been asked to set up a running club there. Due to the commitment shown to P.E. in the school we were chosen by our School Games Co-ordinator to attend a Youth Sports Trust Peer Training day at Wolverhampton University.

Primary Physical Education and Sports Premium 2014-2015

Government in England is providing funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2013/14 and 2014/15. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school Head teachers to spend on improving the quality of physical education and sport for all their children. At Lilleshall School we aspire to provide at least two hours Physical Education during curriculum time each week for all pupils. Funding for schools is calculated by the number of primary-aged pupils (between the ages of 5 and 11.) Lilleshall Primary School received an allocation of £8,400 for the academic year 2013-2014. This was allocated in two instalments: October 2013 £5,432 and April 2014 £2,968.

The funding is ring-fenced and can only be spent on Physical Education and Sport provision in schools. The money has to be spent on improving the provision of Physical Education and Sport. However schools will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

In light of this new funding, staff and pupils at Lilleshall Primary School have reviewed the sporting provision and have used the funding to:

  • Improve the quality of PE lessons by hiring specialist Sports Coaches to work alongside teachers, in particular for Football, Tennis and Rugby.
  • Purchase equipment to extend the range of sporting provision in school – Archery, New Age Kurling, Skipping Ropes, Gymnastic Mats, Playtime Equipment, New Storage Systems.
  • Increase the school’s participation in sporting events with other schools through the Telford and Wrekin Sports partnership.
  • Contribute to the cost of transport to sporting events and competitions.
  • Developing whole school fitness though Skip 2 B Fit initiative.

We have considered our children who are less enthusiastic regarding PE and working with them have established our Fun Fitness Club. This has been extremely popular. The children learn how to skip, hoola hoop etc. and are given the required equipment to take home to maintain and develop their fitness levels in a ‘fun’ way. From April 2014 the school has a Change 4 Life Club to further encourage those pupils less engaged in Physical activity promoting a healthier lifestyle.

Whole school assemblies will also have a focus on Change 4 Life and developing the children’s understanding of healthier lifestyles. The school has close links with Lilleshall Tennis Club employing its coach to work with children one afternoon a week and promoting two after school clubs a week. This relationship has been rewarded in the past by the allocation of six tickets to Wimbledon.

The school also has close links with Newport Running club and participates once a year in a fun run organised by the club. Within school a notice board promotes Community links, Sainsbury School Games activities and raises children’s awareness of sporting opportunities and events.

Through these approaches we hope to engage all pupils in Physical Education and Sport, encouraging an interest that extends beyond school into later life.
