LF: To write direct speech for a newspaper article.
When we are using direct speech we must use a reporting clause to say who said what.
The reporting clause of direct speech is the short clause that indicates who is talking. It is the clause that is outside of the inverted commas. It is therefore not the words being spoken.
e.g. A witness commented that, "It was the most terrifying day of my life."
A young girl from Pompeii, explained how, "Nobody could see where they were going, the air was getting darker by the second."
